Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

What do you want in a movie? Action? It's got it. Romance? It's got it. Suspense? It's got it. Surprises? Holy Cow does it got it. Special Effects? Only the best, and by the boat loads (excuse the lame nautical pun) Johnny Depp? It's got him, back in the smashing reprise of his best screen presence to date. I can't ruin surprises so this will be vague at best, but here's a summer movie like only one other, and of course I'm talking about 2003's "Curse of the Black Pearl" (I've never made a review on this one, but it receives four solid gold stars from me. A rarity in films; both a rip-roaring, mainstream, bona fide box office success, and a cult classic.) I can't say that this sequel is better than the first, but it is just as good in many ways, and introduces so many new elements into the story that it is at once connected to the original but totally sea worthy on its own. (somebody stop these lame puns, please. It's not my fault, it's almost four in the morning, I've just returned from the midnight showing) There are so many twists and turns much like the first one in that you can't ever really pin down the ending until it's staring you in the shell shocked face. Gore Verbinski remains one of my favorite directors, giving this film the same care and quality as his others producing an excellent finished work. There are so few pirate movies these days and when I watch this it makes me kind of sad, there's a whole world to be explored among the pirates, but after I've returned to the real world, when credits have rolled, I realize it's actually a good thing that the pirate genre is so exclusive to these films. Can you imagine all the second and third rate actors of the world attempting to reproduce Depp's legendary (for he is in fact just that) Captain Jack Sparrow? Or worse, some atrocious form of animated pirate crew? What Disney has going with Pirates of the Caribbean is a very good thing. Good for them. Good for us. Really good for Orlando Bloom. (as long as he's here, no one's forcing him into acting school) That's a low blow to be sure, but there are only so many stilted love conversations we can bear between Will and Elizabeth. Blaming Knightly will do you very little good, we all saw Pride and Prejudice, so we know she's capable, and heaven help us all when she and Johnny Depp converse, the sparks don't stop! I can only assume it's Bloom who scuttles that particular ship. (Oh I'm three for three, though that one was just a little forced.) What am I doing, I now ask myself, I'm sitting here attacking the hero and stabbing both them as actors and myself as a reviewer in the back. The simple fact of this movie is this: it is great, not just like "talking with a middle aged woman after Sunday service" great, but like thrilling, astounding, cinematically excellent, Great! It broke through all the pre-set notions I had about theme-park-ride-movie-sequels (oh wait, there's never been one before) and fulfilled every fleeting hope I had for it's potential. I can do no more than to tell you that if you liked the first one, see this one, I can think of no reason why you'd be disappointed.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the cliffhanger ending. It seems Shawn Levy was not to happy about it.

I did express my want to see the third one, though I didn't specify why. The ending had numerous unexpected twists, though I think I have them figured out so I don't know if it's really a cliff hanger. All that to say, yeah the ending was I thought a great one, it drew from such classics as Casablanca in it's final moments.

as a side note, I really don't see eye to eye with Shawn Levy on much of anything. The reviewers whose opinions I take into account are Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun Times, Peter Travers of Rolling Stone, and the Yahoo.com MovieMom. In general if two of those three like it I'll give it a shot.

yeah it's true. You just see the tribe that was going to eat Jack, and they're all dancing around worshiping that dog that they chased off when Jack escaped, it's all of ten seconds long. I liked the monkey in the first one better.

So, I just saw this. First, I did not like it as much as the first, period. However...I DID like it...and I reeeeeeeeeeeally expect to like/love/obsess over the third...a lot.

Don't worry Tyler, I expecty you to like/love/obsess over the third...a lot, as well. It wouldn't be a Pirates movie if you didn't. How did you think the first was better, script, acting, story, special effects? I really can't choose which is better. The first one has been built up as this cult classic and it's so excellent, but in the second they have all these great things like vocab. Here's a little "joel summer movie theory 101; any summer movie that can legitimately, and I mean really honestly properly legitimately use the word Leviathan is alright by me." you can quote me on that, it's just that Leviathan is so epic and Biblical, Biblical in an epic sense really, it's so Isaiah 27:1. Words like that make talking fun, not fun in the curse like a sailor way, fun in the extravagant eloquence way.

For one, the script wasn't quite as good, but then, I will always give preferrance to humor. And the fiirst was a little funnier, a little lighter. I went to see the first 3 times in theaters in a week. I might see this one twice in theaters, total. But remeber, I DO like this one. Jack Sparrow was...dare I say perfect? The others...better than before. The CGI great, the fighting fun and exciting. But but but...seeing as how this one is essentially a prequel to the REAL action....combining the 8 I give this one with the 10 I'll give the 3rd...trumps the firsts 10 by far.

the first was ligther, but I liked how dark this one got at times, and the comedy was so extreme at times that it all worked well in the end. as far as the script goes, maybe the dialogue wasn't as timeless as the first, but the story itself was so good, possibly better than the first, with everyone looking for the chest with their different reasons, and Will thinking Jack and Elizabeth are going behind his back, and especially the last part with Jack and Elizabeth, it was so unexpected, I actually felt my jaw drop, th whole thing was so epic in scale and all that, and it left so much hanging for the third, it was just such an awesome summer movie, I have to see it again. Speaking of summer movies, next year is going to rock, we have Harry Potter 5, Spider-Man 3, Pirates 3, and whatever else they whip up between now and then, I'm so excited. I love the movies, thy are the best entertainment, but only when done right, as this one was

Why? I didn't care for it that much, but I don't think it was that bad. I'd say it's worth the admission price, but not much more.
So don't buy popcorn.

I know it's terrible ot be so swayed by reviews, but I read a lot of really awful ones, even from people who liked his previous movies. Peter Travers gave it two stars, the moviemom gave it a "C" and Ebert is bed ridden so all three of my favored critics were down for the count, and then I heard from other friends who had seen it to wait for a matinee show if I saw it in theaters at all, until I finish combining I'm not free in the afternoons so I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Maybe if it's in the drive in with something else I want to see.
